The annual award ceremony honoring those who work in the theatre business has finally found their host.
According to Broadway.com, Kevin Spacey will host the 71st Annual Tony Awards from Radio City Music Hall.
Kevin Spacey was named the host after a long list of more favorable hosts turned down the opportunity.
Tina Fey was originally chosen as host, however, plans fell through due to scheduling conflicts with her musical adaptation of Mean Girls. Last year’s host James Corden, was approached by CBS to come back for an encore performance and declined the opportunity. Tony Award-winning and hosting veteran, Neil Patrick Harris, was unable to accept the position, due to his Netflix series, A Series of Unfortunate Events being filmed during said award ceremony. Hugh Jackman, another Tony Award hosting veteran, was busy filming The Greatest Showman. Lastly, creator of Broadway sensation Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, is currently in London, filming the new Mary Poppins movie. Miranda is, however, expected to host in 2018.
As you can see, Spacey was not exactly CBS’ first choice in hosting the annual event. Spacey is not exactly known for his time in the theatre world. He currently stars in multiple awarding winning original Netflix series, House of Cards. This isn’t to say that Spacey has no experience in and around theatre.
Spacey began his career as most film actors do, on stage. Working in theatre alongside his work in the film industry, Spacey has appeared in six Broadway shows from 1982 until his most recent appearance in 2007. A Tony Award-winning actor in his own right, for his role of “Louie” in the 1991 production of Lost in Yonkers, as well as becoming the Artistic Director of The Old Vic, located in London, England, Spacey is no stranger to theatre.
Being a huge Neil Patrick Harris (NPH) fan myself, I was a little bummed to hear that he was busy with Netflix. Although I am also a huge Kevin Spacey fan, he is a little bit of an odd choice for me, but there are people who are thrilled with the idea of a Spacey hosted event. Personally, I cannot see Spacey being as much of a vibrant and outgoing host, as NPH and Corden have been in the past. Having said that, I am excited to see if Spacey can quiet the critics and give an exciting show for those watching.
How do you feel about Kevin Spacey hosting this year’s Tony Awards Ceremony? Is there someone else, you think was overlooked? Post any comments down below, I would love to hear your thoughts!
